There are plenty of whole-grain crackers on store shelves, but none taste as good to me as these made at home. They are quick to mix together and easy to roll out and take only 6-7 minutes to bake! Also great recipe to make with your kids! Let them play with different cookie cutters and you will have a jarful of different shapes and a plenty of good memories to cherish!
“Healthy” crackers can be hard and dry, but these are made with plenty of olive oil. They are crispy and crunchy, perfect with salsa, hummus, cheese and butter!
I have used very basic spice mix – salt, black pepper and red chili powder but you can also use other spices such as thyme, rosemary, ajwain and dried methi to change the flavors. Though topping are optional, toasted sesame seeds add another subtle crunch and black chia seeds make them look nicer, hence I have used both. Other options are – sea salt with any dried herbs of your choice!
Ingredients:
2 cups Whole Wheat flour
1 tsp Baking powder
½ cup or less Water
8 tbsp Olive oil plus extra for brushing
½ tsp Salt
1/4 tsp Chili powder
1/4 tsp Ground Black pepper –
1 tsp grated Garlic (optional, but highly recommenced)
Sesame seeds,Chia seeds and Flax for sprinkling on the top.
Method:
1. In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, salt and spices.
2. Form a soft dough. It needs to be firm but you can add more water if it is too dry. Add a few drops at a time to be careful.
3. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. This is necessary for the dough to relax so it can be stretched.
4. Preheat the oven to 425ºF.
5. Lightly dust your work surface and roll out the dough. Sprinkle the seeds, roll it again to as thin as you like. Cut into desired shapes – squares, heart or any other shapes.
6. Brush with Olive oil.
7. Place the cut pieces on the baking sheets.
8. Bake for about 6 or 7 minutes, until blistered, golden and dry.
9. Remove from baking sheet and let them cool on wire rack.
